Each SCSI card does have a unique BIOS and should be downloaded only from the web page that is addressing the specific controller model i.e. download the 29160N BIOS 3.10.0, from the 29160N download page. Attempting to post the BIOS from another SCSI card could leave the card in an unusable state.
The following precautions should be taken into account prior to flashing the BIOS to version 3.10.0:
Only one card should be in the system during the BIOS 3.10.0 upgrade, flashing process.
If there are other cards in the system, one of the following errors may be received:
Status Code: 4 (Invalid BIOS image file)
Status Code: 13 (Unable to flash some of the host adapters).
If an attempt is made to flash an ASIC chip set built onto a motherboard, the following message should be received:
Status Code: 10 (Unable to find Adaptec devices)
The 3.10.0 flash BIOS is intended for retail products only. Attempting to upgrade any ASIC that came with your computer, is not supported or recommended. If there is a built in ASIC on the motherboard, then it should be disabled, prior to flashing any additional cards in the system.
ALL cards will display the following messages and they may appear when installing and combining SCSI cards in a system for the first time, even though all SCSI cards may already be at the 3.10.0 BIOS level.
- SEEPROM checksum error has been corrected.
- A mismatch single image master configuration has been detected.
Remember these are not error messages but rather an indication of a self-correcting process that the SCSI cards are going through.
The reason for these messages, after restarting, is because of major changes and differences between the Bios 3.xx.x technology and that of the 2.xx.x and earlier versions of BIOS. Any Adaptec SCSI card not at the 3.10.0 BIOS level, will display the BIOS banner separately.
All SCSI cards with the 3.10.0 BIOS upon reboot, after upgrading the BIOS should display:
- SEEPROM checksum error has been corrected
and then it may ask to 'Press any key to reboot your system.'
The 39160 will display:
- SEEPROM checksum error has been corrected
twice and then ask you to 'Press any key to reboot your system.'
Another message will then appear after rebooting with:
- A mismatch single image master configuration has been detected.
Please press any key to reboot your system.
This is the SEEPROM message is removing legacy information from the SCSI card.
On the 39160 it will do this for each channel and then correct a Single image configuration,
and be rebooted a second time.
Once this process has been completed, these messages should not appear again.
Here is an example of what can be seen and might save a little bit of time.
Let's say that four boards have been installed in a system; a 29160N, 29160LP, 29160 and 39160 in that order. When the BIOS banner is displayed during the POST cycle, we will see:

If 'Ctrl-A' is pressed, then the time it takes the SCSISelect Utility to come up will depend on the number of controller cards in the system. With 3.10 BIOS and four cards in the system it takes approximately 15 Seconds to get into the BIOS.
Once SCSISelect has come up on the screen, it will display the following:

Notice that the 29160 in slot 05 is missing from the above display. This is because the BIOS on that controller is set to 'Disable:NOT Scan.'
In the above example, there is a hard drive on Channel B of the 39160. However, even though there is now a single BIOS image, the BIOS where the boot drive is located must be Enabled in order for the hard disk to boot.
Keep in mind that any BIOS below 3.10.0 will display it's own BIOS banner.
There are a few changes in the 3.10.0 version of the BIOS. This article is intended to help understand the new POST (Power On Self Test) process for the 3.10.0 BIOS and what the BIOS is going through.
